Contraception as a merit good

Recently, the Pope has claimed that “avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil” as an answer towards the recommendation from the World Health Organization about the use of contraception in Zika virus countries.

In order to reduce the rapid spread of this virus, contraception has been an amazing tool in order to provide benefit to both individual and the general population. Reducing high risk of pregnancy and improving outcomes for babies has been achieved as well. As that being said, contraception is a great example of merit good, where social benefit exceeds the private benefit.
